With our speakers Dr Emma Derbyshire, TC Callis and Dr Alex Richardson

About this event

Malnutrition in early life has become a public health crisis hiding in plain sight, and it has profound consequences for the developing brain.

The National Diet & Nutrition Survey (NDNS) reveals a stark reality: a significant majority of the population - particularly children, adolescents, and pregnant women - fail to meet even the minimum recommended intakes for certain critical brain nutrients.

Why This Event Matters

Good nutrition matters at all ages, but the first 1,000 days of life from conception represent a critical "sensitive window" where nutrition is fundamental to building the brain and nervous system.

Sub-optimal nutrient supplies during this period can raise lifelong risks for physical and mental ill health.

You Will Learn

  • How national nutrition surveys show malnutrition is going from bad to worse in the UK - and why it matters for mental health, wellbeing and performance
  • Why nutrition of women of childbearing age is of particular concern given its critical importance for lifelong health outcomes
  • How some "neglected nutrients" vital for brain development and function are not even being tracked
  • Which specific nutrient shortfalls are relevant to developmental conditions such as ADHD and dyslexia, and child behaviour and learning in general.
  • What simple changes we could all make to help improve matters - as members of the public, professionals or policymakers.

Who Should Attend

  • Professionals, researchers and students in any of the many disciplines involved in nutrition and health or allied areas
  • Charities, support groups or other organisations with an interest in improving physical or mental health
  • And anyone else interested in preventative and person-centred approaches to healthcare and wellbeing - for personal or professional reasons.
